Etymology and history of research

Alexander Cortés-Diago, Luis Alfonso Ortega, Luis Mazariegos-Hurtado and André-Alexander Weller described the hummingbird under its current name Eriocnemis isabellae . The type specimen was collected in 2005 by Cortés-Diago and Ortega during a field study . »Eriocnemis« is derived from the Greek words »erion ἔριον « for »wool« and »knēmis κνημίς « for »cuff, leg splint «. The specific epithet »isabellae« was dedicated to Isabella Cortes, the daughter of Alexander Cortés-Diago.
