Argelia is located in the south of Cauca in the Provincia del Sur on the Río San Juan de Micay . The municipality borders El Tambo in the north, El Tambo and Patía in the east, Balboa in the south and El Charco in the Departamento de Nariño as well as Guapi and Timbiquí in the west .

The municipality of Argelia has 27,670 inhabitants, of which 4,177 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
