River course

The Río San Juan de Micay has its source in the Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 3100  m . The course of the river is located in the west of the Departamento del Cauca . The Río San Juan de Micay initially flows 90 km north through the mountains. He passes the small town of Argelia at river kilometer 185 . Then it cuts through a mountain ridge in a westerly direction and reaches the western Colombian coastal lowlands. He turns north again for a few kilometers. On this section, at river kilometer 90, the river flows around the small town of López de Micay in a narrow river bend. To the north of López de Micay it absorbs the water of several rivers and then crosses the coastal lowlands in a west-northwest direction. 20 km above the mouth, a smaller arm of the river branches off to the west, which flows into the sea after a stretch of 26 km. The main estuary flows north and reaches the south bank of a bay, into which a tributary of the river Río Naya, which runs further north, also pours.
