La Vega is a municipality ( municipio ) of the departments of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

La Vega is located in the Provincia del Sur in Cauca at an altitude of 2272  m above sea level. NN , 104 km from Popayán . The municipality borders in the north on La Sierra , in the south on San Sebastián and Almaguer , in the east on Sotará and San Agustín in the Departamento del Huila and in the west on Sucre .

The municipality of La Vega has 47,417 inhabitants, of which 3430 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The area of ​​today's La Vega was opened up for the Spaniards by Sebastián de Belalcázar in 1535 . The place itself was founded in 1777 and received the status of a municipality in 1875.

economy

The main industry in La Vega is agriculture . In particular, coffee , sugar cane for panela and corn are grown. Over 90% of the community's population live from the income of the agricultural sector, with small-scale production and largely subsistence farming.
