Timbío is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Timbío is located in the Provincia del Centro in Cauca at an altitude of between 1000 and 2000 m above sea level. NN , 13 km from Popayán on the western slope of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . Timbío belongs to the unofficial metropolitan area of Popayán . The area of the municipality is mountainous and is crossed by the Timbío River . The municipality borders on Sotará to the east, El Tambo to the west, Popayán to the north and Rosas to the south .

The Timbío municipality has 35,564 inhabitants, of which 14,105 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Timbío was founded in 1535 by Juan de Ampudia and Pedro de Añasco on the instructions of Sebastián de Belalcázar . The region around Timbío was characterized by a particularly great resistance of the indigenous population to the Spanish conquistadors. Timbío has had parish status since 1825.

economy

The main industries in Timbío are agriculture and cattle production . In particular, coffee , sugar cane , macadamia , corn , beans , cassava , tomatoes and asparagus are grown. The breeding of smaller animal species and the industrial processing of food also play a role.
