El Tambo is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

El Tambo is located in the Provincia del Centro in Cauca , in the unofficial metropolitan area of ​​Popayán . The municipality borders López de Micay to the north, Patía , La Sierra and Argelia to the south, Morales , Cajibío , Popayán , Timbío and Rosas to the east and Timbiquí to the west .

population

The municipality of El Tambo has 48,094 inhabitants, 7,193 of whom live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

El Tambo was founded in 1641 with the aim of better controlling the indigenous peoples living in the area . El Tambo has had the status of a municipality since 1914.
