Patía is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia . The main town (cabecera municipal) of Patía is El Bordo .

geography

Cajibío is located in the Provincia del Sur in Cauca at an altitude of 910 m above sea level. NN , 85 km from Popayán . The area of the municipality is crossed by the Patía river . The municipality borders on La Sierra and Bolívar to the east, Argelia and Balboa to the west, El Tambo and La Sierra to the north and Sucre and Mercaderes to the south .

The municipality of Patía has 37,504 inhabitants, of which 14,194 live in the main town of El Bordo (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Patías lived in the area of today's municipality, and were completely exterminated during the colonial era. The first settlement in the Patía Valley was founded in 1749 under the name of San Miguel de Patía . Today's main town, El Bordo, was founded in 1824 by the Spanish monk José María Chacón y Sánchez. Patía has had parish status since 1907.

economy

The main industries in Patía are agriculture and cattle production . In particular, coffee , corn , sugar cane for panels , fruit and vegetables are grown. 90% of the farmers are smallholders.
