Piendamó is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Piendamó is located in the Provincia del Centro in Cauca at an altitude of 1685  m above sea level. NN , 25 km from Popayán and 100 km from Cali . Piendamó belongs to the unofficial metropolitan area of ​​Popayán . The area of ​​the municipality is mountainous and is crossed by the Río Piendamó . The municipality borders on Silvia to the east, Morales to the west, Caldono to the north and Cajibío to the south .

history

In the area of ​​today's Piendamó, Spanish settlement began in 1535 under the encomienda system . Between 1917 and 1924 the railway line between Cali and Popayán was built, giving the Piendamó region some population growth. At first Tunía was the seat of the municipality, which was moved to Piendamó in 1934. Tunía is today a corregimiento of Piendamó.

The main industry in Piendamó is agriculture . In particular, coffee , bananas and ornamental plants are grown.
