Bolívar is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia . Bolívar is known for the Cerro de Bolívar , a hill on which there is a monument in honor of the Madonna of the Protective Cloak.

Bolívar is located in the Provincia del Sur in Cauca at an altitude of 1777 m above sea level. NN on the west side of the Central Cordillera of the Andes , 145 km from Popayán . The municipality borders in the north on Patía and Sucre , in the south on Santa Rosa and San Pablo and La Cruz in the Departamento de Nariño , in the east on Almaguer and San Sebastián and in the west on Florencia and Mercaderes .

history

The area of today's Bolívar was inhabited by the Quilla indigenous people before the arrival of the Spaniards . The neighboring town of Almaguer was initially founded by the Spaniards on behalf of Sebastián de Belalcázar , from where Bolívar was eventually settled. It was officially founded in 1793 under the name El Trapiche . Due to the role of the place during Simón Bolívar's struggle for independence , the place was later renamed Bolívar.

The main industry in Bolívar is agriculture . In particular, corn , coffee , sugar cane , fruit and potatoes are grown.
