Puerto Tejada is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

Puerto Tejada is located in the Provincia del Norte in Cauca at an altitude of 968  m above sea level. NN , 108 km from Popayán and only 17 km from Cali . Puerto Tejada is located on the Río Cauca and its tributaries Río Desbaratado and Río Palo . The municipality borders in the north on Cali and Candelaria in the Department of Valle del Cauca , in the south on Caloto and Villa Rica , in the west on Villa Rica and Jamundí in the Valle del Cauca and in the east on Miranda and Padilla .

The municipality of Puerto Tejada has 46,166 inhabitants, of which 40,767 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Puerto Tejada was founded in 1897 with the aim of being able to better control the Afro-Colombian groups resident in the region , which consisted of released and runaway slaves , by the central state and the regional landowners. The place named after General Manuel Tejada was initially a Corregimiento of Caloto and received the status of a municipality in 1912.

economy

The most important branch of the economy in Puerto Tejada is traditionally agriculture , today especially the cultivation of sugar cane . There is also the sugar cane processing industry and milk production .
