Jamundí is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia . Jamundí borders directly to the south on Cali , the capital of the department, and is part of the unofficial metropolitan area of Cali .

geography

Jamundí is located in the Sur sub-region in Valle del Cauca on the left bank of the Río Cauca between the Western Cordillera of the Andes and the Farallones de Cali Natural Park . The municipality borders in the north on Cali , in the east on Puerto Tejada and Villa RIca in the Departamento del Cauca , in the south on Buenos Aires and Santander de Quilichao in Cauca and in the west on Buenaventura .

The municipality of Jamundí has 129,877 inhabitants, of which 88,633 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. The metropolitan region has 3,151,710 inhabitants (as of 2019).

history

Jamundí was founded on March 23, 1536 by Pedro de Añazco and Juan de Ampudia.

economy

The main economic sectors of Jamundí are agriculture (growing sugar cane , rice , citrus fruits , bananas and coffee ), mining ( coal and building materials), tourism and trade .

Sports

The second division Dépor FC was based in Jamundí from 2006 to 2008 and played its home games at the Estadio Cacique de Jamundí . In 2009 the club moved to Cali.
