Zarzal is a town ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Zarzal is located in the Norte sub-region in Valle del Cauca at an altitude of 916 m above sea level. NN , 139 km from Cali and has an average annual temperature of 24 ° C. Zarzal is located on the west side of the central cordillera of the Andes in the Cauca Valley. The municipality borders in the north on La Victoria and La Tebaida in the Departamento Quindío , in the south on Bugalagrande , in the west on Roldanillo and Bolívar and in the east on Seville .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Pijaos and Gorrones lived in the area of today's Zarzal . The first Spanish settlement was founded in 1783. The name Zarzal is of indigenous origin. From 1850 to 1857 the place was called Libraida . From 1840 to 1857 Zarzal had the status of a municipality, which it finally received in 1909.

economy

The most important industry in Zarzal is agriculture , especially the cultivation of sugar cane. Trade also plays an important role.
