Buga is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia . The full name is Guadalajara de Buga . The "Ciudad Señora", as it is also called, is mainly known for its "Basílica del Señor de los Milagros".
geography
Buga is located in the Centro sub-region in the Valle del Cauca . The area of the municipality consists of two zones, a lowland zone on the banks of the Río Cauca and a mountain zone in the central cordillera of the Andes and lies between 969 and 4210 meters. The municipality borders San Pedro and Tuluá to the north, Chaparral and Rioblanco in the Tolima department to the east, Ginebra , Guacarí and El Cerrito to the south and Yotoco to the west .

The municipality of Buga has 114,316 inhabitants, of which 98,702 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Buga, the 400-year-old city of the Valle del Cauca and thus one of the oldest in Colombia, was founded four times, according to historians, each in different places and at different times.
The first foundation whose date is unknown, was from the governor ( governor ) Sebastian de Belalcázar arranged.
The second founding 1554–1555 under the name "Nueva Jerez de los Caballeros" happened on the orders of Pedro Fernández del Busto and was carried out by Giraldo Gil de Estupiñán.
The third foundation 1557-1559 took place under governor Luis de Guzmán and was carried out by Rodrigo Díez de Fuenmayor. The city was named Guadalajara de Buga and it was located in the Tunessi Valley .
The relocation and re-establishment of the city took place on March 4, 1570 and was ordered and carried out by governor Álvaro de Mendoza y Carvajal. He baptized the city "Guadalajara de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria de Buga".
The city was finally moved to its present location in 1573 under governor Jerónimo de Silva von Beltrán de Unzueta. Since then, the city has its current name Guadalajara de Buga.
Buga was made a parish in 1887.
American Airlines Flight 965 crashed in the area of Buga Municipality in 1995 . 159 of the 163 people on board died.

The diocese of Buga has its seat in Buga . The most important church in the diocese is the Basílica del Señor de los Milagros de Buga , which is the destination of numerous pilgrimages. The cathedral of the diocese is the Catedral San Pedro Apóstol .
