El Cerrito is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia .

geography

El Cerrito is located in Valle del Cauca in the Centro sub-region , 46 km from Cali , at an altitude of 987 m above sea level. NN . Due to different altitudes, practically all climatic zones can be found in the municipality. The municipality borders in the north on Guacarí , Ginebra and Buga , in the east on Rioblanco in the Departamento del Tolima and Palmira , in the south on Palmira and in the west on Vijes .

The municipality of El Cerrito has 58,563 inhabitants, of which 36,280 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

El Cerrito was founded in 1825 by Manuel José Guzmán and received the status of a municipality in 1846.
