Alcalá is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Alcalá is located in the sub-region Norte in the extreme northeast of Valle del Cauca on the western side of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The municipality borders Ulloa in the north, Filandia in the Departamento del Quindío in the east, Quimbaya in Quindío in the south and Cartago in the west .

population

The municipality of Alcalá has 23,195 inhabitants, of which 12,463 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Alcalá was founded in 1791 by settlers from Antioquia and initially had the names Furatena and La Balsa . It received the status of a municipality in 1919 as Alcalá.
