Yumbo is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia . Due to the high degree of industrialization of the city, Yumbo is nicknamed Capital Industrial de Colombia (industrial capital of Colombia). Yumbo is located directly north of Cali and is part of the unofficial metropolitan area of Cali .

Yumbo is located in Valle del Cauca in the Sur sub-region at an altitude of 1021 m above sea level. NN . The area of the municipality is divided into mountainous and flat areas. The municipality borders Vijes to the north, Cali to the south, Palmira to the east and La Cumbre to the west .

population

The municipality of Yumbo has 128,616 inhabitants, 112,941 of whom live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. The metropolitan region has 3,151,710 inhabitants (as of 2019).

history

The area of Yumbo was inhabited by indigenous peoples long before the arrival of the Spaniards , including the pre-Columbian Yumbo people , whose origins are unknown, but who otherwise lived in the area of today's Ecuador . Yumbo was discovered in 1536 by the Spanish conquistador Miguel López Muñoz . Yumbon received the status of a community in 1864.

economy

Yumbo's main industry is industry , which has settled in the community since the 1940s due to its proximity to Cali. A total of 461 large companies are based in Yumbo. In addition to the proximity to Cali, the proximity to Cali Airport and easy access to the port of Buenaventura are important factors.
