Guacari is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Guacarí is located in the Centro sub-region in Valle del Cauca at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. NN on the Panamericana , 45 km from Cali and has an average annual temperature of 25 ° C. The municipality is characterized by the rivers Río Cauca , Río Guabas, Río Sonso and Río Zabaletas. In the east, Guacarí is part of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The municipality is bordered by Buga to the north, El Cerrito to the south, Ginebra to the east and Yotoco to the west .

history

Guacarí was founded by the Spanish in 1570 by building a church under the name of San Juan Bautista de Guacarí in order to better control the indigenous people living in the region with the encomienda system . Many archaeological pre-Columbian artifacts have been found in the region.
