Bernardo Romero Lozano (* 1909 in Buga / Valle del Cauca , † 1971 in Bogotá ) was a Colombian actor and director, radio and television pioneer.

Life

Romero Lozano went to Bogotá at a very young age to study piano at the Conservatory. After marrying actress Carmen de Lugo , he dropped out of training to find a job. In 1938 the President Eduardo Santos appointed him director of the Teatro Colón Bogotá .

With the establishment of Radio Nacional de Colombia in 1940, a group of authors developed around Hernando Vega Escobar who devoted themselves intensively to radio plays , and who Romero Lozano joined in 1943. Numerous pieces based on classic Colombian and international works were created, including pieces by young Colombian dramatists.

In 1946 Romero Lozano founded the first experimental theater group at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia . At the same time he worked as a speaker teacher for the politician Jorge Eliécer Gaitán . After founding Colombian television in 1954, he directed the first television play E1 niño del pantano , in which his wife, son Bernardo and actor Jaime Monsalve appeared.

The Argentine television director Fernando Gómez Agudelo became aware of him, and at his suggestion, an Argentine-Colombian group of actors came into being (with Pedro Martínez , Axel Anderson , Mary Carmen Gordon and Mabel Jaramillo , among others ), which subsequently realized numerous television and radio plays, including an adaptation of Kafka's " The Trial ".

Together with Romero Lozano - and for a time the Japanese Stanislawski student Seki Sano - until 1958 he ran the television game department of Colombian television. He then worked as an assessor and as an actor and author and adaptations.

In 1964 he took part in the sixth congress of the Federación Internacional de Artistas (FIA) in Mexico, at which the Premio Bernardo Romero Lozano was created in his honor . As a founding member, he was a defining figure of the Círculo Colombiano de Actores (CICA).

In 1971 he became the representative of the President of the Republic of Colombia on the board of directors of the Instituto Colombiano de Cultura (COLCULTURA). A few days before his death, the shooting of the film María , in which he worked as an actor, was completed under the direction of Tito Davison .

Romero Lozano wrote the drama Doña Inés vuelve al convento and the literary critical essay Lo que nos queda de Víctor Hugo .
