The Lord of Miracles Basilica ( Spanish Basílica del Señor de los Milagros ) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Buga in the Colombian Valle del Cauca . The church of the Diocese of Buga is dedicated to Jesus Christ and has the title of a minor basilica . It was built as a pilgrimage church at the beginning of the 20th century .

history

The original design of the basilica comes from the German Redemptorist Johannes Baptista Stiehle , who was also responsible for the Cathedral of Cuenca in Ecuador. The foundation stone of the building was blessed by the Archbishop of Popayán Juan Buenaventura Ortiz, in which the then President of Colombia, Rafael Núñez , also took part. The construction lasted fifteen years, during which, among other things, the War of the Thousand Days took place. The church was consecrated on August 2, 1907. On June 23, 1937, Pope Pius XI. as the fourth church in the country the title of a minor basilica . Care is provided by the attached Redemptorist monastery.

The three-aisled basilica was built from brick. The church has two 33 meter high bell towers above the entrance, one of which received a clock from France on March 18, 1909. Three portals lead into the 80 meter long church, the lighting of which is supported by a crossing dome with a drum . The elaborate altar stands in a round apse .
