Brother Johannes Baptista Stiehle CSsR (born June 1, 1829 in Dächingen , Kingdom of Württemberg ; † January 20, 1899 in Cuenca , Ecuador ) was a German Redemptorist brother, architect, builder and carpenter.

He worked in Alsace for more than twenty years and after the conquest in 1871 he had to go to Cuenca in 1873, where he stayed until the end of his life. He drafted the plans for the construction of the cathedral in Cuenca and directed the construction until shortly before his death (1889 or 1899), at the same time he was also active in the construction of the basilica Lord of Miracles in the Colombian city of Buga .

The structural achievements of Brother Johannes Baptista Stiehle not only found recognition among his friars, but also earned him the appreciation of broad circles of the population. His expert advice and his active participation in the renovation of houses that had become dilapidated as a result of earthquakes or due to age, made him popularly known under the name medico de las casas ("house doctor").

During his creative time in France and Ecuador, he wrote over 60 letters to his siblings, relatives and friends, almost all of which have survived today. The letters impressively portray the religious and the secular at the same time and allow an insight into the attitudes and contemporary history of the second half of the 19th century.

The German School Cuenca was named after brother Johannes B. Stiehle.
