The Kaiyūkan ( Japanese 海 遊 館 ) is one of the largest public aquariums in the world. It is located in Osaka , Japan .

The aquarium shows different habitats in 16 pools , together with the respective marine life. The habitats range from the Pacific Ring of Fire to the Pacific Ocean . The largest basin contains 5,400 cubic meters of water and is home to fish such as the manta rays and the whale shark .

The Kaiyukan Aquarium was opened on July 20, 1990 and is one of the largest urban indoor aquariums in the world with a total water volume of 11,000 tons. Kaiyukan puts the Gaia hypothesis (after James Lovelock) in the foreground, according to which "the volcanoes of the earth and all living beings on them interact and thus form a single living being". The theme of the aquarium is based on this principle.

The tour in the footsteps of the Ring of Life and the Ring of Fire begins in the underwater glass tunnel ( Aquagate ). Here the curtain opens to the spectacle of life, which begins in the sun-drenched Japanese forest and leads directly to the heart of the exhibition, the Pacific Ocean , an aquarium with 5,400 tons of water, in which the largest fish in the world, the whale shark, lives.

The aquarium is not only home to fish species, but also amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals as well as invertebrates and plants, together more than 580 species and a total of around 30,000 exhibited creatures.
