The Austrian Embassy in Skopje ( Macedonian Австриската амбасада Скопје / Avstriskata ambasada Skopje , Albanian  Ambasadës austriake në Shkup ) is the headquarters of the Austrian Ambassador in northern Macedonia , the diplomatic representative of the Republic of Austria in the Republic of Northern Macedonia ( Republika Makedonija Severna ).

history

What is now Macedonia belonged to the Ottoman Empire until 1912 , diplomatic relations of the Habsburg Monarchy ran through the Austrian embassy at the Sublime Porte in Istanbul. From 1918 to 1941 it was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and then Yugoslavia , with the responsible embassy in Belgrade . On September 8, 1991 it announced its independence. Diplomatic relations with Austria were established on December 23, 1994. In 1995 the North Macedonian embassy opened in Vienna .

In August 1997 the Austrian Embassy in Skopje was opened. The Austria Library followed on December 21, 2001 in cooperation with the University of Bitola .

With the status of EU candidate country in December 2005 , relations were intensified. In January 2007 an attaché for cultural issues and international cooperation was accredited, and in July 2007 an office for the liaison officer of the Ministry of the Interior (police attaché) was set up. Since 2013 Austria has also been inviting North Macedonia to the Western Balkans Conferences , which are taking place in Vienna.

North Macedonian-Austrian relations

Relations between the two countries have always been "very friendly", and Austria is the EU member that supports the accession of North Macedonia most intensively.

From an economic point of view, trade relations are relatively unimportant for Austria. In 2014, the volume of foreign trade between Austria and North Macedonia was 118 million to 69 million euros, which is only around 0.1% of foreign trade. However, it contributes to its importance as one of the main players in the Western Balkans: Austria is the second most important economic partner for North Macedonia after the Netherlands , direct investment  (FDI) in North Macedonia in 2014 amounted to around 500 million euros.

An important cooperation is the support in police matters by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior . The Western Balkans Conferences are an important basis for understanding on important geopolitical issues. The promotion of social policy issues and networking with European and international institutions is underlined by the Ministry of Social Affairs' own liaison officer (social attaché) .

The cultural exchange is also close ,

In addition to the Austrian library, artist exchange programs and cultural events, the embassy takes care of scholarships and research funding for students and scientists. A special program is the k-education project office Skopje of the Ministry of Education and KulturKontakt Austria .

organization

The seat of the Austrian Embassy in Skopje is the North Macedonian capital Skopje , in the Mile Popjordanov No. 8 in Kozle in the Karpoš district .
