List of Austrian ambassadors in the Philippines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first attempts to open an Austrian consulate in the Philippines were made as early as 1820, but the Spanish government was not interested in foreign consulates in the colony at that time. The corvette SMS "Archduke Friedrich" came to Manila in February 1870, u. a. to find a suitable candidate for an honorary consulate. One of them was found and reported to Vienna (Julius Spanier, born in Hanover and working for a Swiss trading company). On September 16, 1871, Emperor Franz Josef I approved his appointment as honorary consul - and thus the opening of the first Austro-Hungarian consulate in Manila.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Austria and the Republic of the Philippines began on October 17, 1946, a few months after the Philippines had finally become an independent and sovereign state.

In 1979, the opening of a resident embassy in Manila was prepared and the diplomat Herbert Kröll was sent to Manila to rent or purchase suitable properties, etc. On June 10, 1980, the Council of Ministers in Vienna formally decided to open a resident embassy in Manila. Before the opening of a resident embassy in Manila, the Austrian head of mission in Jakarta was also accredited for the Philippines.

Today, the embassy covers the Philippines as well as Palau .

The Austrian Embassy is located on the 4th Floor, Prince Building, 117 Thailand Street (formerly Rada Street) Legaspi Village, Makati, Metro Manila .

The Austrian embassy in Manila was opened in 1979 with Herbert Kröll as chargé d'affaires. Before that, the Austrian ambassadors with their official seat in Jakarta were also regularly accredited to the governments of the Philippines .
