List of Austrian ambassadors in Syria
The Austrian embassy is located in the Immeuble Sabri Malik in Damascus . Damascus was looked after by a vice consulate that was subordinate to the consulate general in Cairo until 1850 .
Bartholomäus von Stürmer was Internuntius in Constantinople from 1834 to 1850 kk . After the return of the province of Syria under the full sovereignty of Abdülmecid I , he proposed in a letter dated April 21, 1841 to Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich to set up a consulate general in Damascus.
Damascus was looked after by a vice consulate under the consulate general in Beirut until 1931 . The Syrian Republic in the League of Nations mandate for Syria and Lebanon led to an upgrade to honorary consulate.
From 1955 to 1978 the ambassador in Beirut was also regularly accredited to the government in Damascus. In 1978 an embassy was opened in Damascus.
