Karl Schramek (born August 27, 1949 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat . From 2008 to 2015 he was the Austrian ambassador to Belgium and head of the Austrian mission to NATO .

Life

Karl Schramek graduated from the Bundesrealgymnasium Vienna XV in 1967 in Diefenbachgasse. He obtained his doctorate in law in 1972 from the University of Vienna . After military service and legal practice, he completed the 10th course at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna from 1973 to 1975 .

In 1975 Schramek joined the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs . From 1977 he worked at the Austrian Embassy in Budapest ( Hungary ), from 1980 at the Austrian Embassy Dakar ( Senegal ), from where he also worked in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone was accredited. In 1983 he was transferred back to Budapest; from 1984 he was director of the Austrian cultural institute there.

From 1985 Schramek headed the Department of Arms Control and Disarmament, Nonproliferation in the Foreign Ministry and in this role also represented Austria in the Permanent UN Disarmament Conference  (UNCD) in Geneva, in the UN Disarmament Committee  (CD) in New York and in the International Atomic Energy Agency  (IAEA) in Vienna.

In the years 1990 and 1991 in Schramek was SPÖ - parliamentary group worked until 1996 he was International Secretary of the SPÖ. He was then foreign policy advisor to Chancellors Vranitzky (1996) and Klima (1997).

In 1997 he became Foreign Policy Advisor  to Donald J. Johnston, Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) . In 1998 he became the Austrian ambassador to the OECD .

After interim management of two departments of the Foreign Ministry, he became Austrian Ambassador to Syria from 2004 to 2008 . From 2008 to 2015 Schramek was Austrian Ambassador to Belgium and at the same time head of the Austrian Mission to NATO.
