The Austrian Embassy in Paris is located in 6 rue Fabert, in 7 e arrondissement (F-75007 Paris).

history

Envoys from the Viennese court appeared as early as the 16th century, but France and the burgeoning Habsburg Empire were decidedly hostile to one another, as at the end of the Italian Wars it became apparent that the two states had opposing hegemonic interests. These escalated in the War of the Spanish Succession , when the House of Bourbon ousted Habsburg from Spain, and France found a bitter opponent in Philipp Ludwig von Sinzendorf , chancellor from Joseph I to Maria Theresa . There was a permanent diplomatic mission in Paris from 1679.

building

The embassy building itself, a typical Parisian suburban palace, dates back to the 18th century and was rebuilt in 1865 by the owner Charles Hippolyte Lesellier Vicomte de Chézelles and in 1894 according to plans by the architect Louis Parent . It remained in the possession of the family of the Vicomtes de Chézelles or their descendants until it was acquired by the Republic of Austria on December 22, 1949.
