History and organization

UNESCO was founded in 1945/1946, Austria joined UNESCO on August 13, 1948 and is accredited by it. Since then there has also been a representative office in Paris, the national liaison office of UNESCO in Austria, the Austrian UNESCO Commission , was established in 1949.

The representation is subordinate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (currently BMEIA), which is responsible for matters relating to foreign cultural relations and for representing the Republic of Austria vis-à-vis UNESCO. The representative has the status of an embassy , has the title of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador, but is assigned to the embassy in Paris . At times the ambassador to France is also the one to UNESCO.

The office maintains ongoing working contact with the UNESCO Secretariat. She represents Austria in the various offices of the organization (general conference and executive council, subsidiary organs, committees and councils, and bodies - each country takes part in certain functional periods) and supports Austrian concerns. By the widespread agendas UNESCO also several other ministries are involved: Ministry of Education , Ministry of Science , Ministry of Agriculture , Ministry of Health , and the Federal Chancellery .
