The Österreich Institut GmbH is an institution of the Austrian foreign cultural policy for the implementation of German courses outside of Austria and for the promotion of cultural exchange . According to the company, 11,000 course participants study at an Austrian institute each year. The materials for the lessons are created at the institute's headquarters in Vienna .

history

The Österreich Institut GmbH was founded in 1997, for which a separate Austrian Institute Act was passed. As a result, the previous German courses at the foreign missions in Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and Poland were combined and reorganized as the Austria Institute .

As of 2018 there are Austria Institutes in Belgrade , Brno , Bratislava , Budapest , Krakow , Rome , Sarajevo , Moscow , Warsaw and Wroclaw .

The head office in Vienna on Landstraßer Hauptstraße produces teaching materials such as the Österreich Spiegel , a newspaper for German lessons (has been published four times a year since 1998), online materials at sprachportal.at, specialist language folders and film didactics that are used to learn German. The Austria Institute has been cooperating with the Austrian Integration Fund in the preparation of teaching materials since 2015 .

The Austria Institute receives a shareholder grant for its work. In 2014, the institute's level of self-financing was over 80 percent.

  • The institute wants to make Austria visible and tangible as a German-speaking country and part of the European Union. It also organizes Austria-related events and competitions for course participants, German teachers and schoolchildren, the respective Austrian cultural forum or the embassy support the work of the institutes. The institute also works with the German Goethe Institute , the British Council and the Spanish Instituto Cervantes . The Austria Institutes regularly take part in the activities for the European Day of Languages .

    All institutes abroad are examination centers for the Austrian Language Diploma in German. These examination certificates are internationally recognized.
