List of Austrian ambassadors to the Holy See
This is a list of the Austrian ambassadors to the Holy See in Rome , including the former Habsburg and imperial ambassadors (since 1492). The Austrian Embassy to the Holy See is at 9 Via Reno; the ambassador's area of office includes the Holy See, the Order of Malta and the Republic of San Marino .
history
The papal state was annexed by France from May 17, 1809 to May 24, 1817. It was restored by the final act of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In 1856 the Austrian legation was upgraded to an embassy. Under the pretext of taking action against the Risorgimento , troops of the Kingdom of Sardinia attacked the Papal States in 1860 and defeated its troops. As a result, the legations of Bologna , Ferrara and Romagna were later annexed to Umbria and Marche by the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Papal States included Velletri , Viterbo , Civitavecchia , Frosinone and Rome when on March 27, 1861, Camillo Benso von Cavour had the parliament of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) declared Rome the capital. Troops of Giuseppe Garibaldi tried to conquer Rome in June 1862 and September 1867, which was defended by a French expeditionary force. In an agreement of September 15, 1864, the Italian state undertook to maintain the independence of the Papal States vis-à-vis the French state. Napoleon III's troops were defeated on September 2, 1870 at the Battle of Sedan when Italian troops occupied Rome on September 20, 1870. Pius IX fled to the palace on the Vatican Hill and protested on September 29, 1870. Victor Emanuel II (Italy) moved from Turin to Rome on July 2, 1871 . The Holy See has been a subject of international law ever since .
Heads of mission
This list contains only the permanent ambassadors and envoys. Over the centuries, imperial special envoys came to the Eternal City for important negotiations or contracts, who then played a prominent role in relation to the permanent ambassador.
