Georg Adam Ignatius Graf von Martinitz , Czech Jiří Adam Ignác z Martinic , (* 1645 ; † July 24, 1714 in Prague ) was a Bohemian nobleman. He was a diplomat in the service of the Austrian Habsburgs . Most recently he was Viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples .

He came from the Bohemian aristocratic Martinic family . His father was Maximilian Valentin , the mother was Anna Katharina (née Bukůvka von Janovic) . He himself married Maria Felicitas Countess von Spaur in 1679 and Maria Josepha Countess von Sternberg in his second marriage . The marriages produced five sons and six daughters.

Life

He studied law in Prague until 1670 . Then he continued his studies in Siena . He was the master of the Plánice estate . He converted this into a Fideikommiß . In 1685 the family estates Smečno and Slaný were added.

Martinitz was diplomatically active in the service of the Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg. At first he was ambassador to England and Portugal. Before the threatened siege of Vienna in 1682 he was sent to the Archdiocese of Salzburg and numerous Italian states, including the papal court in Rome, to raise funds for the defense. He did this job with success.

Between 1696 and 1700 he was for Empress Eleonore at Innocent XII. active. He defended the imperial rights vis-à-vis the Pope and the imperial feudal people in imperial Italy . This finally achieved the recall of the diplomat.

In Rome he made contact with the builder Carlo Fontana . He designed a city palace in Prague for him. This was realized between 1700 and 1705 in the style of Roman classicism, which is unusual for Prague.

Back in Vienna he became captain of the Arcièren bodyguard . He was also a secretary and conference councilor and, from 1703, Obersthofmarschall . He largely stayed out of political court life. He was also accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece .

After the victories of the Allies in the War of the Spanish Succession in the Italian theater of war, he became the first imperial viceroy in the Kingdom of Naples. Led by the troops of Field Marshal Wirich Philipp von und zu Daun , he arrived in Naples on July 3, 1707 after the conquest of Capua . He was recalled in December of that year. A member of the Redemptorist Church in Naples recalls his short time in Naples.

He is buried in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague in the Martinitz family chapel.
