Alfred Ritter von Arneth (born July 10, 1819 in Vienna ; † July 30, 1897 there ) was an Austrian historian and politician.

biography

Arneth was the son of the archaeologist Joseph von Arneth and the actress Antonie Adamberger . After completing his studies, he worked for the State Chancellery from 1841 and later for the kk House, Court and State Archives . In 1848/1849 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly , from 1861 to 1870 of the Lower Austrian state parliament , from 1869 he was a member of the manor house in the Austrian Imperial Council , where he belonged to the moderately liberal constitutional party . In 1865 he was appointed as a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , where he had been a member of the historical commission since 1864 ; from 1896 until his death he was President of the Commission. Arneth became a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences in 1870 and an external member of the Accademia dei Lincei in 1876 . From 1868 he was director of the house, court and state archives and in 1879 became president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

The Imperial and Royal Army Museum (today the Army History Museum ) in Vienna found a special sponsor in Arneth. Under the chairmanship of Crown Prince Rudolf and Archduke Wilhelm , he was a member of the committee founded in 1885, which was responsible for the formation and design of the museum, which was opened on May 25, 1891 by Emperor Franz Joseph.

Alfred von Arneth married Nina von Schäfer, daughter of a doctor, on May 30, 1844. After the death of a child, she had to spend the remaining years of her life in a sad state of mind († 1867). The only daughter, Auguste (born March  6, 1845 in Vienna; † August 28, 1912 there ), was married to Otto Freiherrn von Eiselsberg (born September 3, 1834 in Linz ; † November 6, 1896 in Ternberg ) since 1867  .

Alfred Ritter von Arneth succumbed to a stroke on July 30, 1897 in what would later become a mourning house, Parkring 16 , Vienna-Innere Stadt . - His honorary grave, occupied on August 2, 1897, is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 49).
