Joseph Calasanz, Ritter von Arneth (born August 12, 1791 in Leopoldschlag , † October 31, 1863 in Karlsbad ) was an Austrian archaeologist and numismatist .

Life

In St. Florian Monastery he was prepared for attending grammar school in Linz. From 1810 he conducted legal, numismatic and archaeological studies. He soon got a job at the imperial coin and antiquity cabinet and became a tutor in the house of Prince Dietrichstein . 1816-1819 he traveled with the young Prince Joseph von Dietrichstein. From 1824 to 1828 he was Professor of History in Vienna. After that he had an administrative job for the imperial collections. From 1840 he was director of the kk Münz- und Antikenkabinett in Vienna, a member of the kk central commission for the research and preservation of architectural monuments and a university professor at the University of Vienna. He became known through numerous writings on numismatics, archeology and art history.

In 1851 the custodians of the kk Münz- und Antikenkabinett Vienna dedicated a medal to him on the occasion of his anniversary in service. This shows the portal to the museum in the Imperial and Royal Hofburg on the back . As Arneth himself wrote, this was in the Augustinian aisle and was accessible from Josephs-Platz through the Swiss Gate.

From 1853 he was a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Arneth married Antonie Adamberger on June 19, 1817 in Weilingau , their son was the historian Alfred von Arneth .

His grave of honor is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 49). In 1894 the Arnethgasse in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) was named after him. The Adambergergasse in the 2nd district of Leopoldstadt is named after his wife .
