Helmut Turk

Helmut Türk (born April 24, 1941 in Linz ) is an Austrian lawyer . From 2005 to 2015 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Türk attended the Bundesrealgymnasium in Bad Ischl , where he passed the Matura in 1959. He then studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in law in 1963 . Until 1964 he devoted himself to studying law and history at the College of Europe in Bruges .

In 1965, Türk joined the foreign service in his country and worked in the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs until 1967 . From 1967 to 1972 he worked at the Consulate General in Hong Kong and then worked again at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1978, where he was deputy head of the international law office in 1977/78. From 1978 to 1982 he worked at the Austrian embassy in Bonn as deputy head of mission. Afterwards, Türk returned to Vienna and until 1993 headed the international law office in the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

From 1993 to 1999, Türk was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the USA and the Bahamas , and Austria's permanent observer to the Organization of American States  (OAU). He then took over the office of cabinet director in the Austrian Presidential Chancellery until 2004 and was extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the Holy See , the Sovereign Order of Malta and in San Marino from 2005 to 2006 .

Between October 1, 2005 and April 2, 2015, Türk was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . From 2008 to 2011 he was its vice-president. In July 2015 he was elected President of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority for a year.

Türk is married and has three children. He has been a member of the Catholic student association KaV Norica Vienna since 1959 and a member of the Catholic student association KAV Capitolina Rome since 2006 .
