Christoph Cornaro (born October 7 or October 8, 1931 in Vienna ) (actually Christoph Freiherr von Cornaro) is an Austrian lawyer, diplomat and pianist.

Life

Christoph is a son of Baron Franz von Cornaro (1897–1989) and his wife Erna, geb. Baroness von Schwind (1900–1986). His paternal grandmother, b. Maria von Spaun (1868–1902) was a granddaughter of Anton von Spaun through her father Ludwig von Spaun (1823–1908) . He has an older sister Maria, a married Baroness von Zessner-Spitzenberg (* 1927).

After graduating from high school, Cornaro completed a law degree in Vienna and the USA with a doctorate, but is also a trained pianist.

In 1955 he began his diplomatic career in the Austrian Foreign Ministry and worked at the Austrian Embassy in London from 1957 to 1962 and at the Austrian Embassy in Brussels from June 28, 1965 to August 29, 1970 . Cornaro later worked as the Austrian ambassador to Iran (1977–1979) and Egypt (1979–1982), where he was chief of protocol from 1982 to 1988. In 1988 he took up the post of Austrian ambassador to India , which he held until 1993.

From 1994 until his retirement at the end of 1996, Cornaro was Austrian ambassador to the Holy See (Pope John Paul II ).

He then took over the management of the concert cycles in Traunkirchen and Atzenbrugg Castle , and he also gave concerts for Pope Benedict XVI. in Castel Gandolfo .

He is married to the American Gail Macmahon and has six children with her, including the priest Johannes Cornaro (* 1970 in Brussels).
