The Austrian Embassy in Kiev ( Ukrainian Посольство Австрійської Республіки в Україні Posolstwo Awstrijskoji Respubliky w Ukrajini ) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev is the seat of the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Austria for the Ukraine ( Ukrajina ).
history
The Ukraine on the left bank (in relation to the Dnepr River) belonged to the Russian Empire , the right bank to Poland-Lithuania . With the partition of Poland in 1795, the Bukovina and Galicia and Lodomeria (Volhynia) came to Austria , where they represented independent crown lands and belonged to the Austrian part of the empire until the First World War . This is why Austria and Western Ukraine are historically closely linked. For the other parts of today's state, diplomacy ran through the embassies in Warsaw and St. Petersburg . After 1918 it belonged to the Soviet Union and the Moscow embassy was responsible .
After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the state became independent in August 1991 (formally December). As early as September 26, 1991, Ukraine and Austria decided in New York on a joint communiqué on the establishment of mutual consular relations. On January 24, 1992, diplomatic relations between the states were established.
The Austrian Embassy was opened on January 24, 1992. Since August 21, 2019, Gernot Pfandler , succeeding Hermine Poppeller , is the Austrian Ambassador to Ukraine.
