history

Estonia belonged to the Teutonic Order , from 1561 to the Kingdom of Sweden , from 1721 to the Russian Empire . The diplomacy of Austria (and Austria-Hungary) accordingly ran through the embassies in Stockholm and in Saint Petersburg .

After the October Revolution in  1917, the country declared itself independent and was recognized by the Republic of Austria on June 26, 1921. The Warsaw embassy was responsible for the Baltic States . After the end of the war, Estonia was absorbed into the Soviet Union , while Austria's representation was in Moscow .

On May 1st, 1990, the country declared itself again independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union and was recognized again by Austria on August 28, 1991, diplomatic relations were established on January 8, 1992. An Austria library was opened as early as 1991 . The Estonian embassy in Vienna has existed since 1993.

On November 1st 1997 the Austrian Embassy was opened.

In 2015 it was decided to leave the embassy open, it is used relatively little, and diplomatic contact with Estonia is possible through EU institutions and should remain “bilaterally intensive”.

Estonian-Austrian relations

Relations between the two countries are "excellent". Despite the economic boom in the Baltic States, it is not particularly important from an economic point of view (2014 foreign trade volume between Austria and Lithuania 120 million to 34 million euros). The cultural exchange is close , with the Austrian library, artist exchange programs and cultural events.
