Wendelin Ettmayer

Wendelin Ettmayer (born August 1, 1943 in Linz , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian politician , diplomat and author .

Life

Wendelin Ettmayer graduated from the Academic High School in Linz, and from 1960 to 1961 attended Pacelli High School in Austin in the US state of Minnesota as an exchange student . In 1962 he graduated from high school . He then began studying law at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1966 . From 1966 to 1967 he also studied political science at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1969 Ettmayer then joined the Foreign Service .

Ettmayer's political career took him to the National Council in June 1977 as a member of his party, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) . With the exception of a four-month break, between June and October 1979, Ettmayer sat for almost 16 years, until February 1993, in Parliament, where he sat on various committees, including the Home Affairs, Education and Constitutional Committees. During his time in the National Council, he also chaired the audit committee as deputy chairman. From 1987 to 1990 he was security spokesman for the ÖVP in the National Council. He resigned from his position as security spokesman for the ÖVP in the National Council after the public became aware of inappropriate behavior by a delegation on a business trip to Romania, in which SPÖ security spokesman Robert Elmecker was involved and in which the two MPs actually had the task of To explore the human rights situation in Romania.

After leaving the National Council, Ettmayer began a career as a diplomat. In 1994 he was Austrian ambassador to Finland , 1994–1997 also accredited for Estonia . Between January 2000 and 2003 he was appointed ambassador to Canada with Jamaica . After heading the department for bilateral and multilateral foreign trade relations at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs between 2004 and 2005 , he was Austrian ambassador to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg between 2005 and 2008 . During this time Ettmayer was acted as a possible Austrian foreign minister several times in coalition negotiations.

Since 1965 he was a member of the Catholic student union KÖHV Alpenland Vienna in the ÖCV , from which he later left.
