Ronald Hirlé

Ronald Hirlé (born February 12, 1950 in Strasbourg ; † December 3, 2019 there ) is a French publisher , author , photographer and the founder of the HIRLE publishing house. As a member of the young generation after the Second World War, he is committed to the German-French dialogue, the factual (objective) representation of historical events and the preservation of occidental culture in his publishing work.

life and work

Ronald Hirlé was born on February 12, 1950 as the son of the composer Mario Hirlé (founder of Cabaret Barabli with Germain Muller). He completed his school education at the Lycée Fustel de Coulanges (in Strasbourg). His role model in the student age was Charles de Gaulle , whom Hirlé admired for his strength of will and his achievements for France.

From an early age, Hirlé was interested in books, technical progress and photography. These inclinations ultimately led to the founding of his own publishing house in 1991, the Hirlé Editions in Strasbourg. This was preceded by a successful career as an advertising manager. In this branch he was, among other things, responsible for communications between German companies in France. These included, for example, Siemens AG, Schwan Stabilo, Triumph International and others.

The art historian Dominique Egret (Paris) and literary experts saw the work of Ronald Hirlé in the tradition of the old publishing house Flammarion in Paris, which was world-famous as a pure family business in the 20th century. "The country owes its size and reputation in the world above all to its literature, art and culture," says Hirlé.

Based on this thinking, the art history lover published the biography of the Parisian gallery owner Denise René , who worked internationally after 1945, early in 1996 . (Cinquante ans d'art construit, hommage à Denise René, ISBN 2-910048-38-1 ). In doing so, he has set a worthy memorial to the specialist in the Art Construit movement. Denise René helped the sometimes forgotten or still unknown artists to a great popularity. These included Max Ernst , Alexander Calder , Hans Arp , Yaacov Agam, Sonia Delaunay , Le Corbusier , Francis Picabia , Victor Vasarely ).

Some of the special books in Editions Hirlé should be mentioned here: the illustrated book - Les Jeux Olympiques de Berlin 1936 - by the German photographer Paul Wolff ("inventor" of the Leica Camera) and two books by the artist Tomi Ungerer (Noël dans tous ses états and Christmas once different). A major concern of Ronald Hirlé as an author is the Franco-German history of the 20th century. The chief translator for most of the publisher's publications is the author Sandrine Woelffel. The book “ Berlin  : Libérée, occupée, divisée, unifiée” from 2009 by Sandrine Woelffel is regarded by historians as a particularly valuable contemporary historical document . It came about with technical support from the archives of the German government of Chancellor Angela Merkel (Berlin).

Around 300 publications in two decades

In the two decades of publishing history, Ronald Hirle has brought around 300 publications onto the market. Many of them are bibliophile treasures with themes from culture, art, war and peace. In 2010 the illustrated book with the title “ Arno Breker - Sculpteur. Designer. Architecte ”( ISBN 9782914729833 ) with an art historical text by the author Joe F. Bodenstein and a foreword by B. John Zavrel, Director of the Musée d'Art Européen (New York). The volume in French and German is the first informative and qualitative French publication about the sculptor based on the book "Arno Breker" by Charles Despiau, which was published by Ernest Flammarion in 1942 on the occasion of the then sensational Breker exhibition in the Orangery of the Tuileries in Paris .
