List of Austrian ambassadors in Portugal
The list of Austrian ambassadors in Portugal lists the Austrian ambassadors in Portugal .
As Portugal did not participate in the continental blockade, Napoleon Bonaparte occupied it in November 1807. Maria I (Portugal) and John VI, incapacitated since 1792 . (Portugal) fled to Brazil on November 27, 1807, from where the court returned to Lisbon on July 4, 1821 . William Carr ruled Beresford from March 1809 to September 15, 1820 . Subsequently, a reign took its place until the king's return. Johann VI. (Portugal), upon his return, took an oath on a constitution previously drawn up by an assembly. However, his wife Charlotte Joachime of Spain and his younger son Michael I (Portugal) refused to take the oath. The “constitutionalists” therefore tried to persuade the king's older son, Peter I (Brazil) , who had stayed in Brazil, to return to Portugal. However, he refused and proclaimed himself Emperor of Brazil on October 12, 1822.
After a failed coup attempt by the “absolutists”, Michael I (Portugal) went into exile. After the death of Johann VI. (Portugal) , Peter I (Brazil) also became King of Portugal. As such, Peter I (Brazil) issued the constitutional charter of 1826 on May 25, 1826 and abdicated in favor of his underage daughter Maria II (Portugal) . Her uncle, Michael I (Portugal) , who had returned to Portugal in February 1828, conjured up this "charter" at the request of Emperor Peter I and was thereupon appointed regent. The Cortes meeting in Lisbon, however, denied Peter all rights in Portugal and on June 30, 1828 proclaimed Michael I (Portugal) king.
In 1916 the official seat of the Austrian ambassador was the Caleada de Sant'Anna 214 Lisbon. Today the official seat is in Avenida Infante Santo 43.
