Alfred Missong jun.

Alfred Missong jun. (* January 14, 1934 ; † January 23, 2017 in Vienna ) was an Austrian diplomat .

Life

Alfred Missong jun. was the son of the Austrian Catholic publicist Alfred Missong sen. By 1952 he graduated from the humanistic grammar school Vienna 18, Klostergasse, and studied law and political science in Bern and Vienna . After working as a freelance correspondent on Austria and Eastern Europe for magazines from Sweden and Switzerland, he joined the Austrian diplomatic service.

From 1958 he worked at the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs  (BMaA) in Vienna, then in the foreign service in 1960 at the Belgrade Embassy (Yugoslavia) , as a press attaché in Moscow (USSR) , and in 1968 as Counselor in London (England) , where he was also a permanent member Austria was a delegate to the international raw material organizations based there, such as the International Coffee Council, Zinnrat, Rubber Council, etc., as well as to the ESA .

From 1974 Missong was again head of the press and information department and press spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna. Finally he became ambassador to Mexico in 1977 and to Caracas (Venezuela) in 1982 , with an extended scope of activities in the Lesser Antilles and the permanent mission to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) . From 1986 to 1993 he was director of the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna . From 1999 to 2000 he was ambassador to Lisbon (Portugal) .

From 2000 to 2001 Missong headed the OSCE mission to Chechnya , which was unable to find a peaceful solution, but was at least able to organize humanitarian aid. He then became involved in training diplomats and international officials in the Central Asia and South Caucasus region .
