List of Austrian ambassadors in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list of the Austrian ambassadors in Germany contains the Austrian diplomats who held ambassadorships in Germany from 1815 to the present day.

In the last phase of the Holy Roman Empire (until 1806) Austria provided an embassy (1662 to 1806) to the Perpetual Diet in Regensburg. After the Rhine Confederation (1806–1813) and the Congress of Vienna (1815), this was followed by an embassy to the German Confederation (1815–1866), in which 35 sovereign princes and four free cities were united .

From 1815 to 1866, Austria sent diplomatic representatives to the Bundestag of the German Confederation in Frankfurt am Main , and from 1871 to the imperial court of the German Empire in Berlin .

In addition, some of the Habsburg embassies founded from the 16th century onwards to individual German states continued into the 1920s.

Heads of mission

Austrian envoy to the German Confederation

Since the Austrian Empire was a member state of the German Confederation , it was not represented in the sense of a foreign state. Like the other members, Austria sent a representative to the Bundestag . According to the federal act, the Austrian representative chaired the Bundestag and ran the business. Austria was therefore called the “ presidential power ”. In practice it was more of an honorary title.

In parallel with the representative in the Bundestag, there was also an Austrian embassy in Frankfurt for a time to the Free City of Frankfurt.
