The list of Austrian ambassadors in Venezuela gives the ambassadors , the highest representatives, of the Republic of Austria in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela . The Ambassador is also in Antigua and Barbuda , Barbados , the Commonwealth of Dominica , the Dominican Republic , the State of Grenada , the Cooperative Republic of Guyana , the Republic of Haiti , the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis , Saint Lucia , Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago , and also acts as the permanent representative of Austria to the Caribbean Community  (CARICOM). Its official seat is the Austrian Embassy in Caracas . ( Spanish Embajada de Austria en Caracas , English Austrian Embassy in Caracas )

history

Imperial Austria hardly had any special interests in the Caribbean, it was not a colonial power. Dynastic affairs such as in Brazil ( Empress Leopoldine ) and Mexico ( Emperor Maximilian ) remained short-term, and the revolutionary states were hostile to the imperial family, who thought absolutistically. Diplomatic relations were only established with Venezuela , which was founded in 1811, on July 28, 1947, and rapprochement only came about after 1955 , with the first mutual visits by high-ranking politicians. The same applies to Haiti (independent in 1804) and the Dominican Republic (split off from Haiti in 1844).

The embassy in Caracas opened in the fall of 1964. at the time there were only four Austrian embassies in South America.

The independence of Guyana followed in 1966, followed by the various Caribbean islands , which were given independence by the United Kingdom in the Commonwealth : 1962 Trinidad and Tobago , 1966 Barbados , 1974 Grenada (from the United States ), 1978 Dominica , 1979 St. Vincent and the Grenadines , 1981 Antigua and Barbuda , 1983 St. Kitts and Nevis . In 1973 the Caribbean Community  (CARICOM) was founded as an international organization based in Georgetown (Guyana) . The CARIFORUM was established in 1992 , and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States  (CELAC) in 2011 as the most important discussion partner, since Austria's accession to the EU, primarily at this level. The central basis today is the strategic cooperation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, the EU-LAK process (EU-Latin America Summit, since 1999), the Cotonou Agreement of 2000 (COM (2000) 324), and the joint partnership strategy EU-Caribbean ( joint EU-Caribbean partnership strategy - JECS) of the 2012th

In addition, the Caribbean has been a priority region for Austrian Development Cooperation  (ADC) since 2007 , within the framework of which the regional office of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs  (UNOCHA) is supported. The Austrian Development Agency  (ADA), which implements ADC, does not have an office in this room.

A robbery at the embassy in 2006 caused a stir.

The announcement that the embassy would move to Bogota after 2015 was also criticized because of Venezuela's economic importance - especially as an OPEC member.

Austrian Embassy in Caracas

The headquarters of the Austrian Embassy Caracas is the Venezuelan capital Caracas , in Las Mercedes , in the Avenida Orinoco (entre Mucuchíes y Perijá), in the Torre D & D.
