Richard Corbet

Sir Richard Corbet of Moreton Corbet (* 1451 ; † 1493 ) was an English knight during the Wars of the Roses .

Life

Richard Corbet was a son of Sir Roger Corbet and Elizabeth Hopton. On May 26, 1465 he was beaten on the occasion of the coronation of Elizabeth Woodville as a Queen Consort in the Tower of London to the Knight of the Bath . He fought in 1469 at the Battle of Edgecote Moor under William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke , to whom he was related by marriage. William Herbert was the guardian of Henry Tudor, later Henry VII , at the time, and when William Herbert was captured in the battle and subsequently executed, Corbet brought young Henry Tudor back to safety in Weobley , a property of the Herbert family in Herefordshire . In a later petition to Henry VII, Corbet mentions this fact again in order to favorably influence the king for his request. The answer from the king is not recorded. In 1471 he took part in the Battle of Tewkesbury on the side of Edward IV .

Under Edward IV, Corbet was given several tasks, such as B. in February 1474 together with Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl Rivers to establish the order of the royal fiefs in Herefordshire. In 1475, Corbet accompanied the king on his French campaign. In 1483 he served under Richard III. when he and Humphrey Stafford were given the task of finding traitors and rebels in Herefordshire and extraditing them.

When Henry Tudor landed with his army in Wales in 1485 and marched east, Corbet joined him in Shrewsbury and fought on August 22, 1485 for Tudor against Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth . and his father-in-law Walter Devereux, 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley . In 1491/92 Corbet still served in France, he died in 1493.
