Herbert (family)
Herbert is the name of a widespread Anglo - Welsh noble family .
Founder of the family is William Herbert ( "Black William" ) (1423-1469), son of the Welsh nobleman William ap Thomas , the builder of Raglan Castle . Like his brother Richard , he replaced his Welsh patronymic ap William with the English surname Herbert . As a party member of the House of York during the Wars of the Roses , he rose first to Baron Herbert and later to Earl of Pembroke .
The ancestry before William ap Thomas is largely uncertain. According to their own tradition, the family descends from a Herbertus Camerarius named in the Domesday Book , a Norman follower of William the Conqueror , and his son Henry Thesaurarius . His great-grandson Peter received extensive lands in Wales from King John in 1210 , which were taken from the exiled William de Braose . His descendants acquired large estates in southeast Wales through marriage. Presumably the name Herbert was used as a leading name in the family for a long time . For the Welsh side, the princess Nest ferch Rhys is often named as ancestral mother . A descent from the kings of Gwent would also be possible .
Members of the family lead or have held numerous peer-reviewed positions throughout English history , including Baron Herbert (1461–1513), Earl of Pembroke (1468–1479 and 1551 – present), Earl of Huntingdon (1479–1491), Baron Herbert of Chirbury ( 1624 – present), Marquess and Earl of Powis Baron (1629–1801 and 1839 – present), Earl of Torrington (1689–1716), Earl of Carnarvon (1793 – present), Baron Darcy de Knayth (1903–1943) and Baron Lucas (1905-1958).
