Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke
Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke KG (* 1538 - January 19, 1601 ) was an English nobleman of the Elizabethan era .
Life
Henry Herbert was the son of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Anne Parr . He was married to Catherine Gray in May 1553 because of her parents' political ambitions . The marriage was annulled in 1554 when Queen Maria I ascended the throne.
Henry Herbert's second wife was Catherine Talbot, daughter of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury , and his wife Gertrude Manners, daughter of Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland . His third wife was Mary Sidney . His children, William and Philip , were both Earl of Pembroke after their father's death.
During the 1590s, Henry Herbert was the patron of Pembroke's Men , a theater company that was the first to stage a number of plays such as Henry VI, Part 1 by William Shakespeare and The Isle of Dogs by Thomas Nashe and Ben Jonson . The latter led to a major scandal.
legacy
Henry Herbert's armor can be seen today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Arms and Armor Gallery. It was made in 1580 by the Greenwich Armory , a royal workshop founded by Henry VIII to manufacture armor for the English nobility. His portrait and that of his father William can be seen in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff . This is located near Cardiff Castle , which was the ancestral home of the Herbert family for a long time .
