Baron Herbert (of Raglan) is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award and history of the title

The title was on July 26, 1461 for William Herbert ("Black William") (1423-1469), son of the Welsh nobleman William ap Thomas and lord of Raglan Castle , by this was called to the English Parliament by Writ of Summons . It was the first peer title given to a member of the Herbert dynasty .

On September 8, 1468, the 1st Baron was also elevated to Earl of Pembroke and Baron Herbert to a subordinate title. After his death, his son William Herbert inherited the title of 2nd Earl. In 1479, at the urging of the king, he returned the title of Earl of Pembroke to the crown and was given the title of Earl of Huntingdon on July 4, 1479 . Since he left no sons when he died in 1491, his earl title became extinct. Since the baron title as Barony by writ is also hereditary in the female line, it fell to his daughter Elizabeth . Elizabeth married Charles Somerset , who was raised to Earl of Worcester on February 1, 1514 . Their son Henry Somerset inherited his mother as 4th Baron Herbert around 1513 and his father as 2nd Earl of Worcester in 1526. Before his great-grandson, his father inherited in 1628 as 5th Earl of Worcester, he inherited the title 7th Baron Herbert prematurely on March 19, 1604 through Writ of Acceleration . The same was raised on March 2, 1643 to the Marquess of Worcester . His grandson, the 3rd Marquess, was also elevated to Duke of Beaufort on December 2, 1682 . His great-great-grandson, the 5th Duke, obtained the restoration of the title Baron Botetourt, created in 1305 and in Abeyance since 1770, on June 4th, 1803 as 5th Baron. In the childless death of his great-great-great-grandson, the 10th Duke, on February 5, 1984, the baronies Herbert and Botetour in Abeyance fell between the female descendants of his sister Lady Blanche Linnie Somerset (1897–1968). The Dukedom and the other titles that can only be inherited in the male line fell to his second-degree great-nephew David Somerset .

The Abeyance of the Barony Herbert ended on January 10, 2002 in favor of David Seyfried as the 19th Baron. He is the son of the younger daughter of the 6th Earl of St Germans and his wife, sister of the 10th Duke of Beaufort. In 2002 he changed his family name to Seyfried-Herbert .
