Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt

Baron Botetourt (/ ˈbɒtətɔːrt /) was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on June 19, 1305 for John de Botetourt when he was appointed to the English Parliament by Writ of Summons . As Barony by writ , the title could also be inherited in the female line, so that when his grandson, the 2nd baron died, his granddaughter succeeded him as the 3rd baroness in 1385. With their childless death, 1406, the title fell in Abeyance between the three sisters of her father John de Botetourt († 1369).

On April 13, 1764, the title was restored to Norborne Berkeley as 4th Baron Botetourt. He became governor of the colony of Virginia in 1768 , but died childless on October 15, 1770, whereupon the title fell again in Abeyance. This was ended on June 4, 1803 in favor of his nephew, Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort , as 5th Baron Botetourt. He already held the titles of 5th Duke of Beaufort , 8th Marquess of Worcester , 11th Earl of Worcester and 13th Baron Herbert . With the childless death of his great-great-great-grandson, the 10th Duke, on February 5, 1984, the Baronies Botetour and Herbert fell in Abeyance between the descendants of his sister Lady Blanche Linnie Somerset (1897–1968). The Dukedom and the other titles that can only be inherited in the male line fell to his second-degree great-nephew David Somerset .
