Awards

The title was created a total of five times. For the first time, this happened in 1138 in favor of Waleran de Beaumont , Earl of Meulan , son of Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Meulan and 1st Earl of Leicester , and twin brother of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester , who but the county in the disputes could not hold at the time of King Stephen .

A second bestowal did not take place until more than 200 years later in 1397 to Thomas Percy , although the title was revoked again six years later. He had taken part in the rebellion of his nephew Sir Henry Percy against King Henry IV .

The next bestowal followed in 1420, this time to Richard Beauchamp, 2nd Baron Bergavenny , who died two years later without a male heir.

The title was created on July 16, 1449 for John Tiptoft, 2nd Baron Tiptoft for the fourth time. He held many high government offices, in particular that of Lord High Treasurer and Lord High Constable . He had already inherited the title of Baron Tiptoft in 1443 from his father John Tiptoft, 1st Baron Tiptoft (1400-1443) , which had been given to this on January 7, 1426 by Writ of Summons . He was executed for high treason in 1470 and his titles were revoked, but these were restored in 1471 for his only son Edward Tiptoft as 2nd Earl. The titles finally expired with the childless death of this 2nd Earl in 1485.

The fifth award is the one that still exists today. It took place in 1514 to Charles Somerset , a son of Henry Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset . As Lord Chamberlain of the Household, Beaufort was a close confidante of King Henry VIII.

In 1642 the fifth Earl of Worcester, who had given King Charles I massive financial support, was appointed Marquess of Worcester . 1682 followed the elevation of the third Marquess of Worcester to Duke of Beaufort . Since then, the titles of Marquess of Worcester and Earl of Worcester have been listed as subordinate titles to the respective Duke of Beaufort. The title Marquess of Worcester has since been worn as a courtesy title of the Duke's eldest son and heir ( Heir Apparent ).
