George Herbert

George Herbert (born April 3, 1593 at Montgomery Castle , † March 1, 1633 in Bemerton , Wiltshire ) was an English writer . Along with John Donne and Andrew Marvell, he is considered to be one of the most important " metaphysical poets ".

Life

George Herbert came from a wealthy, educated family. His father died when Herbert was three years old. His mother was friends with John Donne. His brother was the poet and philosopher Edward Herbert . He had eight other siblings. Little is known about Herbert's childhood and youth. He studied theology and philosophy at Cambridge University and was appointed Public Orator at Cambridge University after successfully completing this course. In 1630 he was ordained a priest. In his lyrical work, Herbert devoted himself almost exclusively to religious topics, which he did not deal with from an abstract or theological, but from a very personal point of view. George Herbert died of tuberculosis on March 1, 1633 in Bemerton, Wiltshire, at the age of almost 40 .

Reception in pop culture

The motto attributed to Herbert "Living well is the best revenge" is the title of an album by the US band Midtown and was taken up by the US band REM as the title for a song on their album Accelerate .

The German Qntal sets the poem Virtue by Herbert in the title song of the album Translucida .
