Leopold Philipp (Arenberg)
Leopold Philipp Karl Joseph von Arenberg , Duke of Arenberg , Aarschot and Croÿ , (born October 14, 1690 in Brussels , † March 4, 1754 at his Heverlee Castle near Leuven ) was an imperial field marshal .
Arenberg was a son of Duke Philipp Karl Franz and his wife Maria Henrietta von Alcaretto (1671–1744), Marquise of Savona and Grana. His father had died as the Imperial Colonel Sergeant on August 19, 1691 in the Battle of Slankamen against the Turks.
In 1706 he took part in the War of the Spanish Succession and fought as an imperial major general in the campaigns in Hungary in 1716 and 1717 . He commanded the right wing of the infantry in the Battle of Belgrade and contributed greatly to the victory. In 1719 Charles VI appointed him . to governor of Hainaut and Mons and to the Dutch Council of State, 1733 to artillery general .
In the Polish succession dispute , Arenberg served again from 1733 under Prince Eugen am Rhein and in 1737 became field marshal and commander in chief of the imperial troops in the Netherlands . He was instrumental in the alliance between England and Holland in 1743 and distinguished himself in the battle of Dettingen . From 1745 Arenberg acted as governor of Hainaut and died in this office in 1754 at his Arenberg Castle in Heverlee near Leuven .
Arenberg was an avid supporter of science, a friend of Voltaire and a patron of Jean-Jacques Rousseau . The latter was financially supported by Arenberg for years.
family
He married Princess Maria Francisca Pignatelli , Countess of Egmont (1696–1766) in Brussels on March 29, 1711 , she was the daughter of the Duke of Bisaccia Prince Nicolaus Pignatelli and his wife Countess Maria Clara Angelina of Egmont . The couple had six children including:
